Twitpic Is Still King Of The Twitter Photo Sites

Twitpic is still the king of Twitter photo sharing sites, according to Compete's data showing each site's audience size. But Yfrog and Plixi (formerly Tweetphoto) are not far behind. And Twitpic's traffic seems to be trending down.

Meanwhile, the "next-gen" Twitter photo apps, Instagram and Picplz, are growing nicely. Instagram -- which has barely developed its website -- is already about one-fourth of Twitpic's reach, according to Compete. And Picplz is growing the fastest, relatively speaking, as it taps the fast-growing Android platform.

(A better look at Picplz's data is on Quantcast, where Picplz is "quantified," showing actual traffic data. There, it says Picplz has about 630,000 global unique visitors over the last month, up from about 200,000 at the beginning of the year -- nice growth.)

Caveat: This isn't necessarily the best snapshot of usage or revenue for these sites. A lot of usage is on smartphones, and Compete isn't a way to measure it. And Instagram and Picplz are both ad-free at the moment, and may eventually make their money via mobile apps, so their web distribution aren't currently as important. But the data should be roughly directionally correct.

Bigger picture: This is a nice race to be in right now, but we still expect Twitter to eventually create its own photo sharing service. That could change the fortunes of many of these sites.
