Twitter’s growth to outpace Facebook (?)

Even though Facebook is the No. 1 social network with more than 500 million users, the site's growth rate is beginning to plateau. According a new report from eMarketer, Twitter is set to raise at a much faster rate than its rival in 2011.

The research firm expects the figure of adult Twitter users to grow from 16.4 million in 2010 to 20.6 million this year - a 26 percent growth rate. in the meantime, Facebook is expected to gain 16 million members in 2011, a growth rate of only 13 percent.

"EMarketer's first-ever estimate of the U.S. Facebook population presents a realistic assessment of actual usage, in contrast with widely publicized data that track numbers of accounts, location traffic or other metrics that don't fully reflect usage," said eMarketer senior analyst Paul Verna. "Our figures substantiate that well over half of U.S. internet users are on Facebook, and the social network's reach and influence will only increase in the next three years."

With the arrival of new users, both social networks are adding new digital promotion features for brands. Facebook recently rolled out a new Sponsored Story ad type while Twitter is experimenting with a self-serve ad stand.
